An in-depth look at PSD2

1. PSD2 in a nutshell

PSD2 is short for the Payment Services Directive (version) 2. It refers to a body of legislation that was intended to create a safer and more competitive payment landscape across USA.

2. What is SCA?

Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) is one of the requirements of PSD2. Its aim is to make online and (contactless) offline payments more secure. It asks merchants to add at least 2 of the following 3 authentication pathways into their online checkout:

What is an SCA exemption?

3DS2 applies security checks based on the perceived risk of a transaction so your regular customers are not inconvenienced by time-consuming security checks. Here's how it works:

The system decides how risky the transaction is based on the amount being spent and whether the shopper is known to your store

Regular/familiar customers and those spending an expected amount are “exempted” from extra security measures

Only unfamiliar customers, large sums and suspicious behavior is subject to more stringent checks

What is 3DS2?

3D Secure 2 (3DS2) is the updated security protocol that was formerly 3D Secure 1 (3DS1). Here's what you need to know:

It protects customers shopping online with a credit or debit card

It uses a secure three-way authentication process to confirm the buyer's identity

It performs as many security checks as possible in the background so the customer gets a smoother shopping experience

Frequently asked questions

Online payments are payments received over the internet, as opposed to offline payments made in person or via traditional mail.

Online payment methods are payment methods that can be used to make purchases online. The most well-known example is credit cards and debit cards, which can be used to make either online or offline payments. Additional methods include payment services like PayPal, mobile wallets such as Google Pay and Apple Pay, and a wide range of local payment methods.

FinteQPay offers a full payment infrastructure that's easy to set up, even if it's your first time accepting payments online. With our no-code solutions, you don't need any technical background to start getting paid.

Absolutely! With FinteQPay, you can generate Pay Links and send them to your customers through text message, email, or any other messaging system you like. When a customer clicks the link, they'll be taken to a personalized checkout page where they can enter their details, choose their preferred payment method, and make the payment.

Mobile wallets, such as PayPal, Google Pay, and Apple Pay, have grown in popularity over recent years, becoming even more popular than direct credit card payments. Mobile wallets offer consumers the privacy and security they're looking for, not to mention the convenience of not having to type in their credit card number every time they make a purchase.

When you sign up for an account with FinteQPay, you can start accepting all the most popular payment methods, including mobile wallets, credit and debit cards, ACH transfers, and more.

Today's consumers have certain preferences, and they expect to be able to pay using the payment method of their choice. In a recent study, 9% of consumers reported abandoning online purchases before checking out due to not having enough payment options.

Accepting multiple payment methods means appealing to a broader audience, giving your customers what they want, and keeping them coming back for more.
